JMH Group Case Studies

The Detroit International Bridge Company

JMH Group was engaged to provide assistance to the Detroit International Bridge that has a very complicated international issue and is in the process of seeking federal permits to build their replacement bridge for the NAFTA Highway from Canada to the United States. JMH Group lead the process to secure a permit from the U.S. Secretary of Transportation despite tremendous political pressure placed on the Federal Highway Administration, Country of Canada and the State of Michigan to deny the permit.

After engaging our firm, JMH Group immediately proceeded with an action plan and organized several high level meetings in the U.S. Congress, Department of Transportation and White House. JMH Group successfully met our deliverable on the application and allocation of $987 Million in Private Activity Bonds to the Bridge Company within a one-year time frame.

SeaBridge Freight

JMH Group was engaged to provide assistance to SeaBridge Freight with a very time sensitive assignment related to the newly proposed America’s Marine Highway Program (AMH). SeaBridge Freight is a short-sea shipping company engaged transporting products from Monterey, Mexico to the Ports of Brownsville, Texas and Port Manatee, Florida. Given that the President included funding in his budget for the Marine Highways program, SeaBridge Freight needed our assistance to secure both authorizing language and funding in the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations process.

As THUD had moved its way into the Conference Committee comprised of negotiators from both the House and the Senate, JMH Group was charged to advocate the Conferees to secure the Senate passed language and funding. If this language were to be secured, it would be the very first time that the Marine Highways Program and Corridors would be funded. The next step would be to work with MARAD and help guide them through the process of reviewing all of the potential applications to choose the very best Marine Highway Corridor and related company funding, SeaBridge Freight was already slated to be picked as the poster child example for this program where as funding was the largest piece of the puzzle for this to be accomplished. Once the funding process was complete, the program would be sent to the Maritime Administration to administrate.

JMH Group accomplished the client’s objective within two months and had the House Conferees accept the Senate language and secure $7 Million in appropriations. JMH Group utilized its combined experience and access to the Chairman of the Full House Appropriations Committee Chairman, Congressman Obey from Wisconsin, in order to press for the inclusion of this program. JMH Group launched a campaign to work with both Chambers of Congress in a bi-partisan fashion, the White House and the Department of Transportation and due to their collective clout succeeded in this mission.
